Foster Ties Oberweis to Same Old Failed Policies at Debate
In first of a series of joint appearances, promises to deliver change, not more of Bush policies
(Geneva, IL) - During their first head-to-head forum since the primary election, Bill Foster promised to deliver change to Washington if elected, and pointed to Jim Oberweis's policies on Iraq and health care as proof that he'll just offer more of George W. Bush's failed policies in Washington.
Foster, a scientist and businessman, explained how his experience as a problem solver who looks at facts over ideology would enable him to confront some of the most pressing issues facing the district and the country.
"Fifteen days from now, there will either be one more vote to continue George Bush's failed policies, or a vote to change course in Washington," Foster said.
Foster specifically contrasted his own health care proposal, which would increase access and affordability, with Oberweis' intention to get rid of employer-provided health insurance. Employer-based health insurance covers over 158 million Americans, including nearly 7.5 million Illinoisans. Foster advocates a guaranteed basic level of care combined with additional private insurance.
The candidates, running in the March 8 special election for the 14th congressional district seat vacated by former Speaker Dennis Hastert, are slated to appear at a number of forums and joint editorial board sessions in the final two weeks of the campaign. Polling released by the Foster campaign last week revealed a statistical dead heat.
