Oberweis Refuses to Part Ways With Bush on Iraq
On TV appearance, candidate fails to renounce “10 years” statement
(Geneva, IL) – This morning, in an appearance on “Fox Chicago Sunday,” Jim Oberweis reiterated his support for George W. Bush’s policy of keeping the troops in Iraq for an indefinite period of time, sidestepping comment on his earlier statement that he would support keeping the troops in Iraq for another 10 years.[1]
Oberweis refused to budge on his commitment to maintaining President Bush’s Iraq policy.[2]
“Over and over again, Jim Oberweis has affirmed his support for George W. Bush’s policies on Iraq. People in this district want to start changing course and bringing our troops home, not leaving our military men and women over there for another 10 years,” said Bill Foster.
Foster, a scientist and businessman who advocates beginning the withdrawal of troops on the ground immediately and getting all troops out of Iraq as quickly and safely as possible, is running against Oberweis in the March 8 special election to fill Dennis Hastert’s congressional seat. On February 5, Foster won both the Democratic primary and Democratic special primary in an election characterized by unprecedented Democratic voter turnout.
“On Tuesday, voters in the 14th demonstrated that they want change, not more of the same failed policies. Jim Oberweis, unfortunately, represents more of the same and a continuation of George Bush’s flawed strategy,” Foster said. “Continuing to risk our troops and drain our economy in a misguided war in Iraq is simply the wrong path, but that’s Jim Oberweis’ path.”
