Dems state cases in 14th District race
THE BEACON NEWS — One caucus and one primary election in, and the 2008 campaign seems to have a theme: out with the old, in with the new. Change, and hopefully change for the better.
Democrats running to replace Dennis Hastert in the 14th District are running with that theme. But first they have to face each other in the Feb. 5 primary elections, and like the Republicans in the race, they seem to have more similarities than differences.
Three of the four candidates -- Bill Foster of Geneva, John Laesch of Yorkville and Jotham Stein of St. Charles -- worked hard to draw distinctions between themselves and their opponents during a meeting Tuesday with The Beacon News editorial board. (The fourth candidate, Joe Serra of Geneva, was not in attendance.) But while the trio disagreed on specifics, they tended to agree more often than not about the big issues in the race.
